For: Team leaders and first-line managers in both office and industrial / manufacturing locations
Coaching is a key tool in helping team members/staff improve their performance. Great coaches motivate, teach,
and reinforce learning through their own good examples.
Once performance has been assessed, specific areas needing improvement are identified.
While discipline attempts to eliminate disruptive or unproductive behavior, coaching tries to improve
performance. Good coaching can help team members develop their abilities.
Objectives
Managers and team leaders will learn to:

Understand the special nature of coaching-a one-on-one activity
that involves showing a team member how to perform a task |

Distinguish between performance problems that require coaching and those that can best be
handled by clear instructions or by other means |

|
Understand the importance of observations and analysis before coaching a team member, since
coaching must be well-thought out and carefully planned |
| |
|
Involve the team member in the coaching process by asking questions and encouraging feedback |
| |
|
Establish effective controls by setting up a review. Most often, more than one coaching session is needed to improve performance |
Description
Once the individual’s performance has been assessed, the leader/manager identifies specific areas that need improvement.
This module shows the participant how to demonstrate the needed skills to the individual and how to motivate him/her to pursue them.
Course Content
Essential Skills of Leadership and Essential Skills of Communicating
An overview of the importance of effective interpersonal skills in managing and communicating with people,
and how these skills support the step-by-step methodology. A review of pre-workshop exercises designed to
start the learning process before the participants arrive at the session.

Course Length and Format
Interactive, 4-hour group workshop designed for 6 to 18 participants

Course Materials
Facilitator’s Guide
Contains complete instructions on how to facilitate the workshop. It includes explanatory text for
the trainer, sample trainer narrative, transcripts of visual segments, and annotation notes.
Participant Workbook
Used to help transfer the step-by-step skills of the behavior modeling process, with job-specific
case studies emphasizing on-the-job aids and resource material supplied within each workbook.

Memory Jogger Card
Provides a handy, succinct reminder of each module’s skill points. This card is to be handed out at the end of each
workshop, so participants can use it on the job as a reminder of the skill points they have learned.
